On September 30, 2004, Merck & Co. issued a worldwide recall of the blockbuster arthritis drug Vioxx from the market because of data from a clinical trial that found an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes among patients.
Vioxx has also been linked to Stevens Johnson Syndrome and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis, which are severe life-threatening skin reactions.

Vioxx is in a class of drugs called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Vioxx works by reducing substances in the body that cause inflammation, pain, and fever. Vioxx is used to reduce pain, inflammation, and stiffness caused by osteoarthritis and adult rheumatoid arthritis. Vioxx is also used to treat painful menstruation.
